THE 'MATE' IN CLIMATE.

I let myself fall on my bed after a long day of lectures and laboratory sessions. University life had started to whip me clean and square. I craved nothing but a cool evening to slither under my blankets and get my hours of sleep. I got everything I needed – except the cool.

From time immemorial, nature has been man’s most caring friend. It has provided him with quite a good time with an assortment of seasons to choose from. The lovely and warm summer, the chilly sip-on-your-hot-tea winter, the windy autumn, and the blossomy springs. Unless you’re extraordinary (and for some reason), you probably love the sight of blossoming flowers, the smell of rain, or its rapid tapping on your windowpane as you look out and remember your childhood. You wish that just one more time you’d be free enough and lose yourself into nature’s beckoning arms.

That was what I thought would happen that evening. The room grew warmer and turned almost violently hot. It was as though a piece of hell was suddenly dropped into my room. I couldn’t sleep. The windows were open but the temperature gave me no chance for rest. In desperation, I got ice cubes and very cold water in a dish and dipped my bedsheet. I wrung it and wrapped it around my body, sending myself effortlessly into chills. I loved that – the sudden cooling. I would tell you how long it took me to fall asleep, but how could I ever know?

The climate has drastically changed in the past few years with rippling effects. It doesn’t just affect us directly as entities, but reminds us of who runs the show before the food is placed on the table and grace is said. From the farmers on the field to bespectacled, overly-powdered tellers swiping your goods at the till, everyone is complaining of climate and ‘her’ change. We however forget we continuously break this friendship and it comes back – like how Newton said it, "Every action has an equal but opposite reaction.” Our friendship with Climate has drastically bleached, and all the signs point to our breaching the contract.

What happened to the “mate” in climate? Weren’t we supposed to be best buds?

 Happy Earth Day!
